The Purpose DrivenR Life
You are about to launch out on a 40-day spiritual journey. It
promises to be a great trip where we will grow in our love for God,
our service to Christ and our attention to the Holy Spirit.
PREPARATION FOR THE JOURNEY
Like all journeys you need to be sure to pack properly. So here is a
list of what you،¦ll need for this amazing trip:
Your Bible. In a recent small group study, it was listed as the # 1
item that would be needed if stranded on a desert island. Don،¦t
begin this journey without it!
A listening ear. Set aside time each day to read one chapter of the
Purpose Driven Life and listen to what God is saying to you. Reflect
on it. Think about the questions at the end of each chapter and
those in this study guide.
A willing heart. The purpose of this journey is not to critique the
bestseller, The Purpose DrivenR Life. No - we are going on this
journey to deepen our relationship with God and sharpen the focus
of our hearts on ،§treasures in heaven،¨ (Matthew 6:20). The book is
merely a tool for that end. Don،¦t focus on the tool - focus on the
relationship between yourself and God.
Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then
you will know what God wants you to do.،¨ (Romans 12:2, New Living
Translation)
TIPS FOR THE JOURNEY
Now that you are packed, here are some tips to help you arrive at
your destination.
Keep your eyes on the goal. Sometimes the trip will be tough.
We،¦ll be examining some large life questions and that takes energy,
time and honesty. All of these can be draining. But don،¦t give up,
keep your eyes on the goal, the end result and it will be worth it.
Travel in a group. On long journeys it helps to travel with some
friends who will encourage you along the way, correct you when
you،¦ve gotten lost; and share the joy of the journey with you as you
go. There are numerous small groups offered to you throughout the
week at various locations throughout the GTA. Join one.
Be sure to ask questions. Each week the pastor will be preaching
on the major themes of the book. This booklet has been designed to
help you stop and reflect on what you are reading and on God،¦s
Word. If there is anything you don،¦t understand or an issue you need
help in addressing, be sure to speak up in your small group, or
privately with your small group leader or with one of the pastors.
A PRAYER FOR THE JOURNEY
Well, we،¦re packed and almost prepared. The last thing we need to
do is pray and then we can set off.
Dear God, As I set off on this journey I pray that You would be my Leader and
Guide. You are the great God and I trust You with all aspects of my life. I
know that Your purposes and plans are good and perfect. I pray that when the
questions get touchy and my spirit starts to lag grant me a willing heart and ears
to hear what You are trying to teach me.
Lord I pray too for my fellow travelers in my small group. Encourage them along
the way. Keep them from all temptation and together may we discover Your
purposes for each one of us. Amen.

doing. Some people spend their energy doing all sorts of things; they
are running here and there. ،§Busy, Busy, Busy،¨ is their motto. It is
when we stop and think about why we are doing what we are doing
that we are examining the purpose of life. Someone may say, ،§My
purpose is to make lots of money.،¨ However, ،§making lots of
money،¨ is in the ،§doing،¨ category. Find out why a person wants to
make money, and you،¦ll probably discover what is his or her life
purpose. This study is about purpose. It،¦s about the ،§Why?،¨
question.

Session Six: You were made for a mission
A notorious British murderer was sentenced to die. The
morning of his execution the prison chaplain walked beside him
to the gallows and routinely read some Bible verses. The
prisoner was shocked that the chaplain was so perfunctory,
unmoved, and uncompassionate in the shadow of the scaffold.
He said to the preacher, ،§Sir, if I believed what you and the

What is the purpose of learning؟

Have you ever contemplated what benefits you received from the 10 to15 or more years you have been in school? Have you asked yourself the question what the return was for the investment of so much time?

Why do we spend so many years in school? Is it because it helps develop social skills and behavior? Or because it keeps young people busy? Or is it just a ritual like the military service that you must pass through in order to become an adult?

Well, some people will claim it is a time for learning, to get prepared for life.  After all, we are supposed to learn for life, not for school!

In this case let us consider what is the factual outcome of all these years “invested in learning.”  You have learned to read and to write, to calculate, to obey, to stay calm and to listen when the teacher speaks.  If you are lucky, you have learned how to work on a PC, to be computer literate.  Of course, you also have learned an enormous amount of “facts” by heart.  This involves the problem that you do not remember them and that most of these facts are obsolete anyway.

You have spent many hundred of hours to learn a foreign language and you know all the rules of the grammar and some words. You are maybe quite good at translation, but you can not communicate.  However, nobody cares, since this is your problem.

The school is the largest bureaucracy man has created.  It is an organization built on the old type of “command and control,” which is based on the military model of organization.

The paradigm of the school is “teaching, repeating – it’s up to you!”  Somebody performs the teaching part following a “curriculum” that was defined by some commission.  The pupils, the students have to listen and to learn it in a way so to be able to report on it as closely as possible to the role model. If they do so, they receive good marks or grades, if not, they will be punished by bad marks or grades. At the end of a period the whole thing will be rehearsed and a diploma will display the results.

This is a very tight control system.  Maybe  we have done away with the physical punishment, but we still have the grading system.  An additional dimension is the competition between the students.  We could say that the main purpose of schools is to teach students how to beat the system and be better than the others.

If you disagree with these somewhat harsh statements, then take the control system away. No more marks and grades, no more diplomas and certificates.  If you do this, the power of the schools and the teachers vanishes.  So would a large part of the students.

I do not know all the answers, but I know some of the questions.  And I know the pain that children and young people are enduring – often together with their parents - because of the school system.

It would be interesting to track school success against success in life.  Anecdotal evidence indicates that many bad learners and even drop-outs have been successful in life and in business.

Why does the school not look at the way adult and executive education works?  Is it because we believe that children and young adults learn in a different way or that they need more command and control?  Or is it because we believe that they are still too far away from real life?  Or is the school too far away from real life?  Have you ever thought about how much of the stuff you have learned in school you really applied in life?

Learning is a discovery process. It leads to a better knowledge of the world around us and should help us to better cope with it.

The teacher should be a facilitator of this discovery process, he should be a resource of knowledge and know-how, he should be a role model.   Unfortunately, most teachers have stopped their discovery process when they discovered the curriculum. They became executors of it and boring routine replaces the joy of discovery.

How much did you learn in school about social behavior, about partnership, about negotiation, about problem solving, about learning?

How many hours were invested into the preparation for parenthood, for coping with difficult situations and crises? 

We always have to live with the same body. We cannot replace it. However,  how much did you learn about health care, about nutrition?  We have only one mind and we live together with other people in a society.  How much did you learn about psychology and sociology?  We spend most of our time in buildings.  How much did you learn about housing?  We spend half of our life working.  How well have you been prepared for your professional life?

Most of us are responsible for children.  How much did you learn about pedagogy?

Did you learn anything about  success, about communication, about partnership?

Did you increase your joy of discovery of our environment?  How many skills have you learned that help you have a happy and successful life.

I know, this article is unfair to all those teachers who genuinely try to prepare their students for life, who are great role models and who never stop their discovery journey.  However, the school is unfair to all young people who are forced to invest their youth into a bureaucratic system far removed from real life.

How different could their life be if schools were a little bit closer to reality?  If schools would follow the paradigm of  executive education, which is “learning, understanding, applying”? This works in management training and  executive education; why should this not work in schools, too?  The “teacher” is the facilitator of learning, the “students” are participants, and the ability to apply is the final test.  Instead of deciding which “stuff” the students have to learn and which exams they have to take to progress to the next level, we should define the knowledge, the know-how, the skills, the abilities and skills the participants should have at the end of a period, and then find out together with the students what the best way would be to get there.

The development of the Internet, and the applications based on it, have led to an array of new learning tools, based on new learning principles and actual content.  We call them “learnware.” Learnware is a product that combines current content, appropriate technology and new learning principles. This is partially captured under the heading of ”e-learning.”

The future development of the internet-related technologies will bring many more application possibilities. New generations of learnware will follow to build completely new learning scenarios. The learning process will be restructured in multiple ways, most of them still unknown to us today.  With “e-learning” and similar concepts we still do just “more of the same” using the Internet. Our way of learning is still very much dominated by the old, traditional, masculine way of work. In the knowledge society and knowledge economy, learning will become as important as work. It may even become paid just like work, because it will be directly linked to the value creation.  Only a fresh view of the learning process can help us find new ways to help people to learn.

Learning depends very much on the context: age, place (school, work, job, etc.), time, previous learning, role models, motivation, alone or with other people, level of knowledge, know-how, experience, etc.

Learning leads to three outcomes:

1.      Be able to know

2.      Be able to do

3.      Be able to explain to others

This leads to a nice overview of learning:

We hope that very soon, schools can really claim that  “we learn for life, not for school. “

There is an array of new initiatives and business ventures, that are focusing on the improvement of the learning process. Just a few examples:

There is the  International Masters In Practicing Management created by Professor Henry Minzberg, who says: “ The MBA trains the wrong people in the wrong ways for the wrong reasons.” (FAST COMPANY, Special Issue, November 2000, page292.)

There is also Learnity, a company that develops and provides learnware for executives. The learnware is based on new learning principles, on business and management principles of the New Economy and the Knowledge Economy and on the latest technology.

There is LearnNow created by Gene Wade, who wants to change the way that poor kids learn and the way that schools drive community economic development.

And there are many other initiatives and business ventures that will help to change the landscape of learning and development.

EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT

This EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT (this" Agreement") dated as of March31, 2008(the "Effective Date"), is between APP Pharmaceuticals, LLC, a Delaware limited liability company (the "Company"); and Richard J. Tajak (the "Executive").

Accordingly, the parties agree as follows:

Aticle1.DEFINITIONS.

     Unless otherwise specified herein, the capitalized terms defined in Exhibit A  apply  and have the meanings therein set out for all purposes of this Agreement.

Article2. SUBJECT MATTER :

A. EMPLOYMENT.

     Subject to the terms and conditions contained herein, the Company shall employ the Executive, and the Executive shall accept such employment, beginning on the Effective Date and ending on Termination Date.

B. OFFICE AND DUTIES.

1.During the Executive's employment hereunder, the Executive shall render services to the Company and its parent APP Pharmaceuticals, Inc., (the "Parent") in the position of Senior Vice-President of Finance.  

   

2. In performing  services hereunder, the Executive shall abide by the rules, regulations, and practices of the Company (and, if applicable, the Parent) as adopted or modified from time to time in the sole discretion of the Company (or, if applicable, the Parent).

 

3. The Executive shall devote entire business time, energy, attention and skill to the services of the  Company (and, if applicable, the Parent) and to the promotion  of its interests.

Article3.COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS.

1.BASE SALARY.

     In exchange for full performance of the Executive's obligations and  duties hereunder, the Company shall pay the Executive a salary at the rate of $350,000.00 per year ("Base Salary"). The Company shall pay the Base Salary in accordance with the Company's regularly established payroll practice and withholding deductions.

 2.COSTS AND EXPENSES.

     During the Executive's employment hereunder, The Company shall reimburse the Executive for reasonable and actual out-of-pocket business costs and expenses that the Executive incur or pay, in consistent  with the policies established by the Board, during rendering to the Company the services provided for herein.

 3.VACATION.

     The Executive is entitled to vacation and sick leave on terms equivalent to those of other executive officers of the Company. The Executive shall accrue four (4) weeks of vacation in the first year of employment with the Company in accordance with the Company's standard vacation policy.

4. BENEFIT PLANS.

     The Executive is eligible to participate in all benefit plans (including but not limited to any medical, dental, life insurance, retirement and disability plans) and to all perquisites, which benefit plans are available from time to time to the executive officers of the Company generally; provided, however, that the Executive may not participate  in any stock option, stock purchase or other plan  relating to shares of capital stock of the Company or its affiliates.

5.BONUS.

     The Company shall pay to the Executive a cash bonus at the rate of $50,000.00 on March 31,2009,if the Company keeps the Executive on employed.

6.INCENTIVE COMPENSATION PLANS.

     The Executive is eligible for cash incentive compensation plans for the Employer's officers and directors as the Board may establish from time to time, which incentive  compensation plans are based on the achievement and satisfaction of goals and objectives that the Board establishes.

Article4.TERM

       Unless the parties hereto renew the agreement in writing of the Employer and the Executive, this agreement   hereunder commences from March31, 2008, and terminates pursuant to Section 8.

Article5.REPRESENTATIONS AND WARRANTIES.

     The Executive hereby represents and warrants to the Company that:

1.the execution, delivery and performance of this Agreement does not conflict with, breach, violate  or cause  a  default under any agreement, contract  or instrument to which the Executive is a party, or any judgment, order or decree to which the Executive is subject;

2.the Executive isn't a party to or bound by any employment agreement, consulting agreement, non-compete agreement, confidentiality agreement, non-disclosure agreement or similar agreement with any other person or entity.

3.the Executive has read through the entirety of this Agreement, and prior to signing it, an independent legal counsel has advised the Executive; and

4.the Executive is not subject to any agreement with a Competitor or potential Competitor  of the Company, or to any other contract, oral or written, that could restrict or prevent the Executive from entering hereinto or performing duties in full accord with this Agreement.

Overview of Learning Styles

Many people recognize that each person prefers different learning styles and techniques. Learning styles group common ways that people learn. Everyone has a mix of learning styles. Some people may find that they have a dominant style of learning, with far less use of the other styles. Others may find that they use different styles in different circumstances. There is no right mix. Nor are your styles fixed. You can develop ability in less dominant styles, as well as further develop styles that you already use well.

Using multiple learning styles and �multiple intelligences� for learning is a relatively new approach. This approach is one that educators have only recently started to recognize. Traditional schooling used (and continues to use) mainly linguistic and logical teaching methods. It also uses a limited range of learning and teaching techniques. Many schools still rely on classroom and book-based teaching, much repetition, and pressured exams for reinforcement and review. A result is that we often label those who use these learning styles and techniques as �bright.� Those who use less favored learning styles often find themselves in lower classes, with various not-so-complimentary labels and sometimes lower quality teaching. This can create positive and negative spirals that reinforce the belief that one is "smart" or "dumb".

By recognizing and understanding your own learning styles, you can use techniques better suited to you. This improves the speed and quality of your learning

The Seven Learning Styles

·                              Visual (spatial):You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding:

If you use the visual style, you prefer using images, pictures, colors, and maps to organize information and communicate with others. You can easily visualize objects, plans and outcomes in your mind's eye. You also have a good spatial sense, which gives you a good sense of direction. You can easily find your way around using maps, and you rarely get lost. When you walk out of an elevator, you instinctively know which way to turn.

The whiteboard is a best friend (or would be if you had access to one). You love drawing, scribbling and doodling, especially with colors. You typically have a good dress sense and color balance (although not always!).

·                              Aural (auditory-musical): You prefer using sound and music:

If you use the aural style, you like to work with sound and music. You have a good sense of pitch and rhythm. You typically can sing, play a musical instrument, or identify the sounds of different instruments. Certain music invokes strong emotions. You notice the music playing in the background of movies, TV shows and other media. You often find yourself humming or tapping a song or jingle, or a theme or jingle pops into your head without prompting.

·                              Verbal (linguistic): You prefer using words, both in speech and writing:

The verbal style involves both the written and spoken word. If you use this style, you find it easy to express yourself, both in writing and verbally. You love reading and writing. You like playing on the meaning or sound of words, such as in tongue twisters, rhymes, limericks and the like. You know the meaning of many words, and regularly make an effort to find the meaning of new words. You use these words, as well as phrases you have picked up recently, when talking to others.

·                              Physical (kinesthetic): You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch:

If the physical style is more like you, it's likely that you use your body and sense of touch to learn about the world around you. It's likely you like sports and exercise, and other physical activities such as gardening or woodworking. You like to think out issues, ideas and problems while you exercise. You would rather go for a run or walk if something is bothering you, rather than sitting at home.

You are more sensitive to the physical world around you. You notice and appreciate textures, for example in clothes or furniture. You like 'getting your hands dirty,' or making models, or working out jigsaws.

You typically use larger hand gestures and other body language to communicate. You probably don't mind getting up and dancing either, at least when the time is right. You either love the physical action of theme park rides, or they upset your inner body sense too much and so you avoid them altogether.

When you are learning a new skill or topic, you would prefer to 'jump in' and play with the physical parts as soon as possible. You would prefer to pull an engine apart and put it back together, rather than reading or looking at diagrams about how it works.

The thought of sitting in a lecture listening to someone else talk is repulsive. In those circumstances, you fidget or can't sit still for long. You want to get up and move around.

·                              Logical (mathematical): You prefer using logic, reasoning and systems:

If you use the logical style, you like using your brain for logical and mathematical reasoning. You can recognize patterns easily, as well as connections between seemingly meaningless content. This also leads you to classify and group information to help you learn or understand it.

You work well with numbers and you can perform complex calculations. You remember the basics of trigonometry and algebra, and you can do moderately complex calculations in your head.

You typically work through problems and issues in a systematic way, and you like to create procedures for future use. You are happy setting numerical targets and budgets, and you track your progress towards these. You like creating agendas, itineraries, and to-do lists, and you typically number and rank them before putting them into action.

Your scientific approach to thinking means you often support your points with logical examples or statistics. You pick up logic flaws in other peoples words, writing or actions, and you may point these out to people (not always to everyone's amusement).

You like working out strategies and using simulation. You may like games such as brainteasers, backgammon, and chess. You may also like PC games such as Dune II, Starcraft, Age of Empires, Sid Meier games and others.

·                              Social (interpersonal): You prefer to learn in groups or with other people:

If you have a strong social style, you communicate well with people, both verbally and non-verbally. People listen to you or come to you for advice, and you are sensitive to their motivations, feelings or moods. You listen well and understand other's views. You may enjoy mentoring or counseling others.

You typically prefer learning in groups or classes, or you like to spend much one-on-one time with a teacher or an instructor. You heighten your learning by bouncing your thoughts off other people and listening to how they respond. You prefer to work through issues, ideas and problems with a group. You thoroughly enjoy working with a 'clicking' or synergistic group of people.

You prefer to stay around after class and talk with others. You prefer social activities, rather than doing your own thing. You typically like games that involve other people, such as card games and board games. The same applies to team sports such as football or soccer, basketball, baseball, volleyball, baseball and hockey.

·                              Solitary (intrapersonal): You prefer to work alone and use self-study:

If you have a solitary style, you are more private, introspective and independent. You can concentrate well, focusing your thoughts and feelings on your current topic. You are aware of your own thinking, and you may analyze the different ways you think and feel.

You spend time on self-analysis, and often reflect on past events and the way you approached them. You take time to ponder and assess your own accomplishments or challenges. You may keep a journal, diary or personal log to record your personal thoughts and events.

You like to spend time alone. You may have a personal hobby. You prefer traveling or holidaying in remote or places, away from crowds.

You feel that you know yourself. You think independently, and you know your mind. You may have attended self-development workshops, read self-help books or used other methods to develop a deeper understanding of yourself.

You prefer to work on problems by retreating to somewhere quiet and working through possible solutions. You may sometimes spend too much time trying to solve a problem that you could more easily solve by talking to someone.

You like to make plans and set goals. You know your direction in life and work. You prefer to work for yourself, or have thought a lot about it. If you don't know your current direction in life, you feel a deep sense of dissatisfaction.

Why Learning Styles? Understand the basis of learning styles

Your learning styles have more influence than you may realize. Your preferred styles guide the way you learn. They also change the way you internally represent experiences, the way you recall information, and even the words you choose. We explore more of these features in this chapter.

Research shows us that each learning style uses different parts of the brain. By involving more of the brain during learning, we remember more of what we learn. Researchers using brain-imaging technologies have been able to find out the key areas of the brain responsible for each learning style.

For example:

·                              Visual: The occipital lobes at the back of the brain manage the visual sense. Both the occipital and parietal lobes manage spatial orientation.

·                              Aural: The temporal lobes handle aural content. The right temporal lobe is especially important for music.

·                              Verbal: The temporal and frontal lobes, especially two specialized areas called Broca�s and Wernicke�s areas (in the left hemisphere of these two lobes).

·                              Physical: The cerebellum and the motor cortex (at the back of the frontal lobe) handle much of our physical movement.

·                              Logical: The parietal lobes, especially the left side, drive our logical thinking.

·                              Social: The frontal and temporal lobes handle much of our social activities. The limbic system (not shown apart from the hippocampus) also influences both the social and solitary styles. The limbic system has a lot to do with emotions, moods and aggression.

·                              Solitary: The frontal and parietal lobes, and the limbic system, are also active with this style.
